Sarasota’s homes don’t follow one script. A West of Trail bungalow with Mediterranean Revival stucco and archways sits a few miles from a Sarasota School of Architecture midcentury home built to blur the line between indoors and out, and both sit within reach of newer construction in Lakewood Ranch or Palmer Ranch, built around open floor plans and covered lanais. Custom cabinetry has to work with whichever one you own, not a generic template.

That starts with materials. Gulf Coast humidity isn’t a minor design consideration here — it’s the difference between cabinets that hold their lines for twenty years and ones that swell, peel, or pull away from their frames within a few. Solid wood, standard particleboard, and unsealed MDF all move when humidity swings between an air-conditioned interior and Sarasota’s outdoor air, especially in kitchens and bathrooms where steam adds another layer of moisture. Plywood construction, moisture-resistant cores, and properly sealed finishes hold up to that cycle in a way catalog cabinetry generally doesn’t.

It also means understanding how the room actually gets used. Sarasota’s indoor-outdoor lifestyle — screened lanais, pass-through windows, outdoor kitchens — puts different demands on cabinetry near sliding doors and covered outdoor space than a fully enclosed kitchen would. A vanity in a Siesta Key second home used a few months a year has different needs than a primary kitchen in a year-round Palmer Ranch household.
